Many of McGonagall’s works are addressed to famous people or to notable citizens of Dundee. The appeal of celebrity was clearly as great in nineteenth century Scotland as it is in our own time. Queen Victoria
McGonagall was a devoted subject of Queen Victoria, famously walking all the way to her palace at Balmoral to obtain her patronage. Several of his poems were addressed to his beloved monarch.
