John McGonagall, labourer, Overgate, pleaded guilty, in Dundee Police Court to-day, to a charge of stealing £4 12s from the premises in Bellfield Street occupied by John Chalmers, ropespinner, Mr Dewar said that accused had concealed himself in the building, and had taken the opportunity of Mr Chalmers’ absence to steal the money from the office. McGonagall, who, it was stated, was a son of the poet, had visited Edinburgh and Blairgowrie, and had met with an accident at Auchterhouse a few days ago. He was conveyed to the Infirmary, and was only discharged yesterday. A sum of £3 4s 7½d had been recovered. Bailie Doig passed sentence of twenty days in jail.
